"Lake Effect" refers to the heavy snowfall that occurs when cold air passes over the warmer waters of Lake Michigan. In Grand Rapids, this means winter travel time is unpredictable. A 20-minute commute can easily become an hour-long crawl. Locals know to add "Lake Effect Time" to their schedule from November to February.
