What is "Hawaiian Time"?
It's more than just what the clock says.
A Relaxed Sense of Urgency
"Hawaiian Time" refers to a cultural understanding that things will get done, but not necessarily on a strict schedule. It's a laid-back approach to life, prioritizing people and experiences over deadlines. While you should be on time for formal appointments, for social gatherings, arriving a little late is often the norm.
When is Whale Season?
December to April
The best time to see Humpback whales is during the winter months. They migrate from Alaska to Hawaiʻi's warm waters to breed and give birth. Peak viewing is typically from January to March.
Merrie Monarch Festival Time
The Week After Easter
The world's most prestigious hula competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival, takes place in Hilo on the Big Island every year. It's a week-long celebration of Hawaiian culture, culminating in three nights of intense competition.
When is the Best Time to See Lava?
Witnessing Pele's creation is all about timing.
AFTER SUNSET, BEFORE SUNRISE
While you might see steam or ground deformation during the day, the iconic red-orange glow of lava is most dramatic against a dark sky. The best viewing times are from just after sunset until just before sunrise, when the glow is not washed out by sunlight.
What Time Do Farmers Markets Open?
Get the freshest produce right on time.
Usually 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM
Most farmers markets on the Big Island, like the famous Hilo Farmers Market, open early. The saying "the early bird gets the worm" is true here! Arrive when they open for the best selection of exotic fruits, fresh vegetables, and local crafts before the crowds arrive.
