The time zone boundary runs through the state primarily due to economic and geographic ties. Most of East Tennessee is mountainous and historically linked with the East Coast, adopting Eastern Time. The flatter, central and western parts of the state are more aligned with the Mississippi River basin and the central United States, hence they use Central Time.
Eastern Time Zone (ET): Knoxville, Chattanooga, Gatlinburg, and the Tri-Cities area (Bristol, Johnson City, Kingsport).
Central Time Zone (CT): Nashville, Memphis, Clarksville, and Murfreesboro.
The dividing line is complex. Generally, the western borders of Scott, Morgan, Roane, Rhea, and Meigs counties mark the start of Eastern Time. However, three counties—Bledsoe, Cumberland, and Fentress—are officially split but mostly observe Central Time.
